The term apnea refers to a disorder where people stop breathing or breathe with less intensity during sleep. In babies, these problems are caused by an undeveloped breathing centre in the brain. If the pause in breathing is too long, it can lead to an ALTE event and eventually death from sudden infant death syndrome.
Sleep apnea is very difficult to diagnose in young children. That's why they use Nanny monitors in dozens of Czech maternity hospitals to monitor babies’ breathing. If the child's brain does not send an instruction to breathe in and an ALTE event occurs, the device will trigger an alarm. As a result, doctors or parents at home can provide first aid in time.
Breathing problems usually disappear at about one year of age because the brain centre is now sufficiently developed.
