Breastfeeding problems

08/06/20 10:25

Hello, I would like to ask if I can breastfeed even though I have a cracked nipple and a little blood flows from it while breastfeeding? The little one is 5 months. It's very painful. The nipple on my other breast isn’t cracked.

Hello, if you have a cracked nipple that bleeds, you can squirt out a bit of milk (to relieve it), even if it hurts, but don't give this bloody milk to your daughter. You will have to pour it away. You can breastfeed from the other breast if the nipple is OK. When the nipple heals, you can start feeding from this breast again.

Insomnia in a 4-month-old girl

08/06/20 10:23

Hello, we have been fighting our daughter’s insomnia for 3 weeks, the most she sleeps during the day is 5 minutes. Otherwise, she whines, sticks her fingers and fists into her mouth. Could it be teething, even if her gums are not swollen? Thank you

Hello, it’s possible it could be the teeth, but unlikely at her age. What is more likely is that she could be suffering from colic. It also depends on how she sleeps at night, how she eats, whether she calms down in your arms or not, whether she has a temperature, diarrhoea, vomits significantly more, whether she is losing weight. If you are breastfeeding, do you have enough milk ? What changed 3 weeks ago? That’s why, I can’t give a clear answer to your question. It would be better for you to visit your daughter's paediatrician and arrange the next steps directly with him/her.

Hello, it is very unlikely that you will transmit chickenpox to your baby transplacentally (“through you”), because you have had chickenpox before, so you should have antibodies.

Vaccination and colds

08/06/20 10:21

Hello, I have a one-year-old son and at the end of the week he should have his last jab of hexa-vaccine. However, he has had a cold since yesterday and today he is starting to cough, he does not have a temperature yet. Can he still be vaccinated or should I postpone it?

Hello, if it is a common cold, without a temperature, as you describe, it does not concern a contraindication to vaccination with hexavaccine, however, I would wait to see if your son doesn’t get worse and postpone the vaccination by about a week, depending on his condition. However, the decision is up to you, upon agreement with your son’s attending paediatrician.

Cold sores in infants

08/06/20 10:20

Hello, I have an 8-month-old son, I’d like to ask, how dangerous is it for him if he gets a cold sore? He got a kiss on the cheek from an acquaintance who had a cold sore on her mouth, unfortunately I noticed it too late.

Hello, cold sores are infectious, so it can appear on the mouth or it can manifest as aphthous stomatitis - mouth ulcers. However, his immune system should be able to deal with this if your son does not have an immunodeficiency. Very rarely, young children may develop herpes encephalitis - inflammation of the brain - following a "cold sore" infection, this can manifest in, for instance, fever, headache, an arched fontanelle, loss of appetite, convulsions, increased sleepiness, etc. In most cases, however, primary infection with the herpes virus is asymptomatic (without symptoms) in children. Therefore, observe your son; if he starts behaving differently than usual, have him examined by his paediatrician.
